In episode 6, we explore Salesforce’s new NFT cloud, movement in the IaaS marketplace and highlights from Apple’s 2022 Worldwide Developers Conference – plus many more.
Apple WWDC announcements
Apple kicked off its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, revealing MacOS Ventura, the latest Apple hardware, more details around its mysterious new ‘Developer Center’ and plans to introduce augmented reality with the help of Hollywood.
Check out more about what was announced at the event here.
Microsoft eat into Amazon’s IaaS market share
The IaaS market is famously controlled by a few players, with the top five IaaS providers accounting for over 80% of total market.
Whilst AWS still control the biggest slice of the pie with a 38.9% share as of 2021 (Gartner), Google Cloud saw the highest growth rate of any of the top five IaaS vendors in 2021, growing 63.7% to reach $6.4 billion in revenue.
Microsoft Azure also saw a market creep, with shares growing from 19.7% to 21.1% in 2021.
Salesforce launch NFT cloud pilot
Triggered by customer curiosity, Salesforce are launching a pilot of NFT cloud. This new platform for buying and selling crypto assets hopes to make NFT selling, minting, and managing more accessible, abstracting from the complicated technology. In the words of Adam Caplan, SVP of Emerging Technology at Salesforce:
“Salesforce is seeing interest from CMOs and CDOs who are asking for help entering web3, and we are enthusiastic about bringing new innovations, products and offerings to our customers in a way that allows them to build and maintain meaningful relationships with their customers,” Adam Caplan, SVP of Emerging Technology at Salesforce, told TechCrunch.”
Big tech halt hiring
It wasn’t long ago that we were discussing a skills shortage, a global event that tipped the market in favour of technologists with skills in high demand and saw prolonged periods of headcount expansion to keep pace with demand for digitalisation.
It seems that the tech boom has since drawn to a close, with many of the top tech companies revisiting their recruitment strategies to slow down hiring, rescinding job offers and in some cases, lay-offs.
As well as a hiring freeze, Meta has announced some significant changes to its product roadmap, with several of its hardware projects either being put on hold or delayed for the time being amid rising costs, and a tightening economy.
Ministry of Defence acquires government's first quantum computer
Working with British company Orca Computing, the MoD will explore applications for its new quantum computer, looking specifically at quantum technology in defence.
Whilst they can’t solve any practical problems yet, the MoD’s exploration of quantum computing has been described as significant.
