GlobalLogic Demonstrates the Cars of the Future
December 4, 2018, Kyiv – GlobalLogic Ukraine and Winner Imports Ukraine recently partnered to demonstrate new automotive technologies and digital innovations for the transportation of tomorrow. GlobalLogic collaborates with many of the world's major automotive brands and equipment suppliers to develop hundreds of software solutions, from information and entertainment systems, to vehicle data exchange systems, to advanced driver assistance systems.
"Modern cars are essentially new smartphones — they can make calls, connect to Wi-Fi, and distinguish voice commands," says Andrii Yavorskyi, VP of Strategic Initiatives, GlobalLogic. "Automobiles are becoming more and more like software products. In fact, the software of a modern, high-end vehicle has more than 100 million lines of code. In comparison, the Boeing 787 has just over 15 million. In the future, software technology is what will define a car."
As an exclusive importer of high-end vehicles, Winner Imports is witnessing rapid change in the automotive industry. The company’s Brand Director for Volvo, Artem Tkachenko, says, “Over the next couple of years, the automotive industry will greatly transform, and we will be at the root of these changes. With new technologies, the car will become not only a means of transportation, but also a place for sleep, work, communication, and rest. The car of the future has the potential to become a serious competitor for long-haul air transportation."
One of the event’s underlying themes revolved around computer vision, which enables a vehicle to "see" a picture of the surrounding area. By understanding its position in space, vehicles can more accurately build maps that can be leveraged for autonomous driving. For example, GlobalLogic developed a driver recognition system that uses a person’s facial features to unlock various car functions.
The showcase also explored a trend steadily gaining traction in the automotive industry: intelligent vehicles capable of communicating with each other. In 2016, GlobalLogic Ukraine had an opportunity to help construct a smart city infrastructure in the US as part of a client project. Leveraging this experience, the company developed its own prototype ("Smart City") that enables automotive computers to communicate both with each other through a V2V protocol and with other elements of a road's infrastructure through a V2X protocol. By "listening" to signals from other vehicles (e.g., there is a road collision up ahead), the system can warn drivers about the road situation in a timely manner. The system can also analyze large amounts of data to more effectively manage traffic flow and urban infrastructure.
Self-driving vehicles and other technologies will be entering the transportation market in just a few years, and as a major player in the automotive technology space, GlobalLogic plans to be at the forefront of this new wave of innovation.
